Now, before anyone has a chance to comment and say “Paul, what the are thinking? Visual Studio is an essential tool and there are certain things that you can’t do with out it!”, I agree and will continue to use SSDT for a few key features. However, at some point I the life of a project it just makes more sense to transition the data model to an enterprise-scale effort. It’s faster, more convenient and just easier than SSDT. I prefer to use Desktop to perform model design. It’s a joy to use compared with my early experiences using SSDT for tabular model design. Not only does Power BI Desktop include a lot of great features, it is stable and streamlined. The Tabular designer was fragile to put it mildly.Įnter Power BI… Initially intended for self-service data model and report design, Power BI Desktop has quickly grown into a robust and full-featured BI design tool. In 2012 when Microsoft began the transition from on-disk cubes to in-memory SSAS Tabular models, I used SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT) to create tabular models. Back in 2005, I used the Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) Visual Studio add-in for SSIS, SSRS and SSAS projects to develop BI solutions with multidimensional cubes. Include the following columns in-order:įinally, in the DimDate table, create a ProductionCalendar hierarchy. For several years, Visual Studio has been my go-to tool for designing semantic data models used for Business Intelligent reporting. In the DimDate table, create a Fiscal hierarchy. In the DimDate table, create a hierarchy named Calendar. To create hierarchies in the DimDate table Rename it Model.įinally, add EnglishProductName to the Category hierarchy. Right-click the ModelName column > Add to hierarchy, and then select Category. A column in a hierarchy is just a representation of the column in the table.Ĭlick and drag the ProductSubcategoryName column to the Category hierarchy. Renaming a column in a hierarchy does not rename that column in the table. In the Category hierarchy, right-click ProductCategoryName > Rename, and then type Category. Rename the hierarchy Category.Ĭlick and drag the ProductCategoryName column to the new Category hierarchy. A new hierarchy appears at the bottom of the table window. In the model designer (diagram view), right-click the DimProduct table > Create Hierarchy. Create new hierarchies To create a Category hierarchy in the DimProduct table Before performing the tasks in this lesson, you should have completed the previous lesson: Lesson 8: Create perspectives. This article is part of a tabular modeling tutorial, which should be completed in order. Creating and managing hierarchies is not supported in Data View.Įstimated time to complete this lesson: 20 minutes Prerequisites To create hierarchies, use the model designer in Diagram View. Hierarchies can appear separate from other columns in a reporting client field list, making them easier for users to navigate and include in a report. For example, a Geography hierarchy might have sublevels for Country, State, County, and City. Hierarchies are groups of columns arranged in levels. SQL Server 2019 and later Analysis Services
